Chapter Seven, Part Two

Robert found himself in front of the little cabin where Miguel had his ham radio. Someday there would be a telephone, too, but for now it was enough that there was any communication at all. The door was unlocked, so he went inside and found Miguel working with one of his students, teaching her how to use the radio.

Miguel looked up and smiled. "Good morning. Here to talk to Sam?"

"If we can reach him." Robert meant, of course, that Sam might be busy. The radios worked better than they had in the war years, now that they had better equipment and could send out stronger signals.

"We'll do our best." Miguel directed his student, whose name was Becky, in finding Sam's frequency, but succeeded only in reaching one of Sam's assistants.

Robert left a message, then gave a little shrug. "That's what happens when you become an important man. You become hard to get a hold of."

Miguel acknowledged this was true and followed him outside, after giving Becky an assignment.

"What are your plans for today?"

"Not much. See if Sophie's around, maybe finish a few letters I've been working on. Rest."

Miguel nodded. "Not a bad way to spend your first day home. I have a small office you can use, if you think you'll need a quiet place to work."

"Actually, I was thinking I'd like to enjoy some of this mountain air."

"Can't get enough of it," the older man agreed. "If you run out of ideas, don't forget the school has a library. Take whatever you like."

Robert thanked him and watched him go back inside the radio station. Then he headed toward the horse pasture.
